The telecom and IT markets are increasingly converging with VoIP perfectly demonstrating this. VoIP (Voice over IP) is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made over your internet connection rather than a fixed phone line in much the same way as products such as Skype; with the exception that calls are made on a traditional handset and to all existing telephone numbers.
The main advantages of VoIP are cheaper line rental, cheaper call costs and ease of setting up remote workers with a fixed line by plugging into their home broadband connection whilst keeping the same landline phone number they use in the office.
For the more adventurous, aspects of your telephone such as voicemail, call forwarding and do not disturb features (plus many others) can be managed via a web browser, so if you get home from the office and have forgotten to transfer your calls, no problem - a few clicks and it is done.
As you can see in the picture opposite, VoIP telephones look very similar to traditional telephones and are identical in operation - in fact once we install a VoIP telephone on your desk you will not notice the difference, except where it matters - in your pocket.
